Overview

The problem of “race” in the contemporary world, is substantially a problem of the white mind.

Joe Feagin & Leslie Houts Picca in Two Faced Racism

The elimination of racism requires the changing of both institutionalized practices and policies, and pernicious cultural norms and standards. It also requires enabling white people to heal from the ways that growing up in a racialized society characterized by white dominance, has damaged their minds. This harmful socialization has left white people vulnerable to notions of white supremacy and to enacting and colluding with racial injustice, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Most of the resources here (See menu in right sidebar.) were developed for a monthly group I led for two years called “White People Undoing Our Own Racism: Challenging White Supremacy in Ourselves and Our Society”. Some were originally written for other groups and trainings I’ve led or co-led on similar topics.

Eliminating racism will also require freeing the minds of people of color from the effects of being targeted by racism, including the inevitable internalization of some of the negative messages of racism. Some of the ideas and practices in these pieces may be useful for that work as well, but they were written primarily for the work of undoing racism in white people.
